Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDC’s) including plastics are something to consider carefully when on your fertility journey. We know that they can interfere with our hormones, mimicking oestrogen in the body and impacting our overall fertility in the process. Yet our exposure to some EDC’s like pollution, can be challenging as we may be unable to do little about it. Plastics however, is an area where there is a LOT we can empower ourselves to do, to reduce our overall exposure. The key to reducing our exposure to plastics, is understanding where this exposure is coming from, particularly as microplastics may be hidden in everyday objects that we are exposed to regularly. Here, Jen shares her 10 favourite plastic free fertility hacks to protect your hormones and support your fertility.

1. Say No to Heating Plastic Containers/Coffee Cups
Plastics can leach harmful chemicals into your food, especially when heated. These microplastics can disrupt hormone function and impact fertility.
✅ Swap to glass or metal containers for food storage.
✅ Never microwave food in plastic containers. Instead, transfer food to a bowl before heating, even if stored in a glass jar with a plastic lid.
✅ Opt for a reusable coffee up and say no to plastic lids. Disposable takeaway coffee cups are usually lined with plastic and/or have plastic lids. When these are heated from the hot drink inside, microplastics can leach into your drink. Use a glass reusable coffee cup instead so you are not exposing yourself to plastics. Otherwise, take the lid off your takeaway cup and enjoy your hot drink plastic free!
Your hormones will thank you later for it!
2. Choose Organic, Plastic-Free Tampons & Deodorant
Many conventional tampons contain plastics, synthetic materials, bleach, and even pesticides, which can disrupt your hormonal balance and affect conception. Organic cotton plastic-free tampons are a safer alternative. Deodorants another culprit - often adding to our single use plastic consumption & full of nasties so choosing a clean product in a reusable case would be a much better option for the environment & our hormones.
❌ Conventional tampons can irritate vaginal tissues, impacting sperm health and cervical mucus production.
❌ Conventional deodorants contain nasties, heavy metals (like aluminium) and are often packaged in plastic.
❌ Some products contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that can interfere with ovulation and menstrual regularity.
✅ Organic tampons are chemical-free, breathable, and gentler on your body.
Choose plastic-free, organic tampons like these from TOTM which offer peace of mind, allowing you to focus on creating a healthy environment for conception. Use Jen’s code JEN30 for 30% off (new customers only).

3. Rethink Tinned Tomatoes
The plastic lining inside tin cans often contains Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical linked to hormone disruption and fertility concerns. Even BPA-free options may not be much better.
🔍 What you can do: 🍅 Look for BPA-free labels like Mr Organic tinned tomatoes.
🍅 Opt for glass jars of tomatoes like passatas.
🍅 Buy fresh, organic tomatoes and dice them for your recipes.
4. Switch to Plastic-Free Tea Bags
Some tea bags contain plastic (Polypropylene or PP), a petroleum-derived material that may not be clearly labeled. Many brands have now transitioned to plant-based alternatives, but some may still contain plastic.
✅ Plastic-free brands: Aldi , Asda , Clipperteas, PGTips, Teapigs, Yorkshiretea , Pukkaherbs, and more.
🔄 Alternative: Choose loose-leaf tea for a completely plastic-free option!
5. Ditch Cling Film – Try These Alternatives!
Cling film contains EDCs that can interfere with your hormones and fertility, particularly when used with fatty or acidic foods or exposed to high temperatures.
✨ Try these eco-friendly alternatives: 🟢 Beeswax wraps 🟢 Silicone lids 🟢 Glass containers 🟢 Stainless steel containers 🟢 Compostable food wraps

6. Reuse Glass Jars/Bottles for Storage
Instead of using plastic containers or bottles, start saving and reusing glass jars for storing: grains/pasta, nuts/seeds, on-the-go snacks/breakfasts, bone broths, homemade chutneys, jams, and sauerkraut.
💧Also, a glass water bottle is a great alternative to plastic, reducing your exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals.
🫙 Less plastic = less exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals!
7. Say No to BPA-Coated Till Receipts
Most receipts are coated with BPA, which can be absorbed through the skin and is linked to fertility issues.
✅ Say no to receipts when possible.
✅ Opt for digital receipts.
✅ Wash your hands after handling receipts.
✅ Support stores using BPA-free receipts.
8. Go Plastic-Free with Fruits & Veggies
Supermarkets often package fruits and vegetables in plastic, exposing them to harmful chemicals.
🌍 Benefits of shopping plastic-free:
✅ Better for your hormones and fertility.
✅ Allows you to pick the best produce.
✅ Reduces food waste.
✅ Encourages eating seasonal, nutrient-rich produce.
✅ Helps the environment by cutting down on plastic pollution.

9. Ditch Plastic Utensils
Plastic utensils are often made with harmful chemicals that can leach into food, especially when exposed to heat. Over time, small amounts of these chemicals can accumulate in the body, potentially affecting hormone balance and fertility.
✅ Swap to reusable alternatives: 🥄 Stainless steel or bamboo cutlery 🥢 Wooden chopsticks 🍴 Travel-friendly reusable utensil sets
By choosing plastic-free utensils, you not only reduce waste but also minimise your exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
10. Swap Out Plastic Chopping Boards
Plastic chopping boards wear down over time, releasing microplastics that can enter your food. Microplastics have been found in human blood, placentas, and even testes, highlighting their potential impact on reproductive health.
✅ Swap to wooden or bamboo chopping boards.
✅ Avoid excessive wear and tear by replacing old boards when needed.
Final Thoughts
Reducing plastic exposure isn’t just great for the environment—it’s a powerful way to protect your hormones and support your fertility. By making small, intentional swaps, you can support your reproductive health while also reducing waste. Let’s go plastic-free together! Your hormones will thank you later. 💚♻️
