I recently interviewed Jen and here's what she had to say:
Hi Jen! I'd love to know what are the main challenges that you find crop up for your clients when it comes to navigating the fertility journey in the workplace?
"The women who work with me tend to ambitious and have worked hard on their career. Fertility challenges such as miscarriage has knocked them sideways and they’ve lost confidence. They often feel like they used to be in control of their lives but now they’re stuck in a hamster wheel of ttc and loss. And this loss of confidence and agency over their lives means they can’t figure out what work means to them anymore. Do they want it to take a backseat for a while or do they want to lean in and use it as a distraction? How do they coach the subject with their manager? How can they make work work for them?"
You managed to get a promotion whilst going through IVF treatment - what was your secret to success?
"It wasn’t easy but I worked really hard with my coach on figuring out the role of work in my life. I wanted to use it as a distraction from the really important stuff happening in my personal life. I used it as a way to rebuild my confidence. I figured out exactly what I needed in terms of flexibility and workload, then had a good conversation with my manager."
How can we manage those upsetting situations, when there is a pregnancy announcement in the workplace?
"It can be so hard to hear pregnancy news or meet new babies. I always felt happy for others and sad for me. But it’s normal to not feel any happiness for others too, to feel hurt and reminded of the tough journey you’re on. I recommend speaking to your manager or a trusted colleague to see if they can give you a heads up on announcements or act as a buffer."
